History
Edit
The original World Heavyweight Championship was created in 1905 when European Greco-Roman Heavyweight Champion Georg Hackenschmidt defeated American Heavyweight Champion Tom Jenkins. From that point Hackenschmidt was declared World Champion. Eventually disputes between promoters splintered the World Championship into numerous titles. Occasionally some these titles would be unified, most notably by Lou Thesz in the late 1940s. The NWA World Heavyweight Championship, one of Thesz's unified titles, claims its lineage stems from the original World Title. Since the AWA, WWWF/WWF/WWE, WCW, ECW and TNA World Titles all resulted from breaking ties with the NWA, every major promotion can trace its lineage back to the original championship.
