Pro Wrestling:Categories

From Pro Wrestling

Jump to: navigation, search

A category is a software feature of MediaWiki that provides automatic indexes, that are useful as table of contents. Together with links and templates they can structure a project and aid navigation.

Ideally, every other category should be a subcategory of at least one other, and every article should be in at least one category; many will fit well into two (e.g. location and subject-matter). A full list of existing categories can be found at Special:Categories.

Usage

Any page can be put in a category by editing the page and adding a link to the category. Just type [[Category:]], and put the name of the category between the colon and the brackets, like [[Category:Foo]].

To add a new category, just add [[Category:Categoryname]] to the article or existing category page (after checking whether any existing category is suitable).

Avoid overcategorization

Overcategorizing happens when an article gets cluttered with too many categories. Even though we are a speciality Wiki, that doesn't mean we need many categories for each subject. Categories are to be used for only useful things, not everything. Remember: categories are a navigational tool, not something to be piled onto the subject.

A big example: alumni categories should be limited to important promotions only (WWE, TNA, Ring of Honor, ECW, WCW, All-Japan, New-Japan, AAA, AWA, XPW, World Class, Stampede, UWF to name a few). When in doubt, do an internet search to see if the promotion is notable or not. For many smaller (indy) promotions, a list article is much better than a category.

Other examples include: current roster and tag teams by promotion categories.

Categories that shouldn't be made

  • Non-wrestlers (of any kind): if a person doesn't wrestle, they should be categorized with their main job title/job titles (announcer, manager, referee, etc).
  • Alumni, roster and tag team categories for minor promotions: all of these are better suited as a list only.
