Tyson Smith (October 16, 1983) is a Canadian professional wrestler better known by the ring name Kenny Omega. He is an executive vice president of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) where he is also signed as a performer.

Career

Early life

Tyson Smith was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on October 16, 1983, growing up in the suburb of Transcona. Smith played ice hockey as a goaltender and had jobs at IGA and Costco. Smith would become interested in professional wrestling after watching Saturday Night's Main Event, his favourite show. A career in professional wrestling opened up for Smith after one of his friends began training for the Top Rope Championship Wrestling (TRCW) promotion. Omega would also begin training with the promotion under Bobby Jay. Smith would make his debut in February 2000, becoming known as Kenny Omega. Omega would initially have a surfer gimmick but it was later developed into an otaku gimmick.

Independents and WWE (2001-2011)

After his time in Top Rope Championship Wrestling, Kenny Omega debuted for another Winnipeg promotion, Premier Championship Wrestling (PCW). During his time in PCW, Omega won the PCW Heavyweight Championship and the PCW Tag Team Championship with Rawskillz. On October 17, 2004, Omega wrestled on the National Wrestling Alliance's 56th Anniversary Show in a loss to NWA TNA X Division Champion Petey Williams. The following year, on June 2, Omega defeated The Amazing Red to win the NWA Canadian X Division Championship and the Premier Cup. Omega would later attend a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) try-out, before he was sent to WWE's developmental promotion Deep South Wrestling (DSW) in October. However, in August 2006, Omega requested his release, later criticising the promotion and its trainers. Following his release, Omega considered a career in mixed martial arts but eventually returned to professional wrestling, armed with a new and unique move set. Omega would also spend time in Jersey All Pro Wrestling (JAPW), winning the JAPW Heavyweight Championship and the JAPW Light Heavyweight Championship.

DDT Pro Wrestling (2008-2014)

In 2006, after watching Kota Ibushi wrestle in DDT Pro Wrestling, Omega was enthralled. As a result, Omega made a video of him wrestling a DDT-esque match. DDT would invite Omega to work for them, with Omega making his DDT debut on August 4, 2008. Omega wrestled Ibushi in a Hardcore Two Out of Three Falls Match on August 6, which Ibushi won. Omega and Ibushi would later form a tag team, dubbed Golden☆Lovers, winning the DDT KO-D Tag Team Championship on January 24, 2009. Omega and Ibushi held the title until they were defeated by Francis Togo and PIZA Michinoku on May 10. Omega won the KO-D Tag Team Championship again on June 19, this time with Michael Nakazawa, holding the title until June 24. On July 24, 2011, Omega wrestled Haruka, a nine year old girl, to a time limit draw. The match would go viral, however, Omega would also receive death threats. Omega later revealed he had been selected to wrestle Haruka due to his safeness in the ring. In September, Omega competed as a representative of DDT in All Japan Pro Wrestling's Junior League, finishing second in Block A. On October 23, Omega defeated KAI to win the AJPW World Junior Heavyweight Championship, holding the title until May 27, 2012. On July 8, 2012, Omega won the King of DDT tournament after defeating Danshoku Dino in the final. On December 23, Omega won the DDT KO-D Openweight Championship after beating El Generico. On May 26, Omega, Ibushi, and Gota Ihashi defeated Antonio Honda, Daisuke Sasaki, and Yuji Hino to win the DDT KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Championship, holding the title until June 23. Omega lost his Extreme Division Championship after he was defeated by Danshoku Dino in a T-Back Table Match on August 25. On January 26, 2014, Golden☆Lovers won the KO-D Tag Team Championship for a second time after winning a Three Way Tag Team Match. On April 12, Omega, Ibushi, and Sasaki won the KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Championship before losing the title on May 4. Golden☆Lovers lost the KO-D Tag Team Championship to Happy Motel (Konosuke Takeshita and Tetsuya Endo) on September 28.

On November 3, 2019, Omega returned to DDT, partnering with Riho to defeat Antonio Honda and Miyu Yamashita.

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (2008-2014)

On November 1, 2008, at Battle of Los Angeles Night 1, Omega debuted for Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), losing to Brandon Bonham. The following night, Omega competed in a Three Way Nine Man Tag Match in which the ropes snapped, sending Omega crashing to the outside. Omega returned to PWG on February 21, 2009, at Express Written Consent, losing to El Generico after referee Rick Knox clotheslined Omega. Later, Omega formed a team with Chuck Taylor, challenging PWG World Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) in a losing effort at PWG DDT4 2009. Omega and Taylor unsuccessfully challenged The Young Bucks again at Against The Grain. At Battle of Los Angeles 2009 Night 2, Omega defeated Roderick Strong in the Battle of Los Angeles tournament final to win the vacant PWG World Championship. At As The Worm Turns, Omega lost the title to Davey Richards.

Two years later, on October 27, 2012, Omega returned to PWG, teaming with El Generico to defeat The Young Bucks. At Fantastica Mania Night 2 on January 23, 2011, Golden☆Lovers lost the title back to Apollo 55, ending their reign at 104 days. On October 24, Omega and Chase Owens, who had joined BULLET CLUB the previous day, were eliminated in the first round of the 2015 Super Junior Tag Tournament by Roppongi Vice (Beretta and Rocky Romero). At Wrestle Kingdom 10, Omega lost the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship to KUSHIDA.

The next day, at New Year Dash 2016, Omega and BULLET CLUB leader AJ Styles defeated Shinsuke Nakamura and YOSHI-HASHI of CHAOS. Following the bout, Omega would attack Styles, becoming the new leader of BULLET CLUB. At The New Beginning In Niigata, Omega won the vacant IWGP Intercontinental Championship after defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi. At ROH-NJPW Honor Rising Night 2, Omega and The Young Bucks, a sub-group of BULLET CLUB dubbed The Elite, won the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Championship from Jay Briscoe, Mark Briscoe, and Toru Yano. The Elite made their first defence at Road To Invasion Attack Night 2, defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi, Juice Robinson, and Michael Elgin. At Invasion Attack, Tanahashi, Elgin, and Yoshitatsu defeated The Elite to win the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Championship. Omega went on to make his first IWGP Intercontinental Championship defence at Road To Wrestling Dontaku Night 7, defeating Elgin. At Wrestling Dontaku, The Elite won back the NEVER Openweight Six Man Tag Team Championship.

In the final two months of 2016, Omega and Chase Owens took part in the 2016 World Tag League, finishing with six points in Block B, failing to advance. At Wrestle Kingdom 11, Omega failed to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from Kazuchika Okada.

Tension within BULLET CLUB (2017-2018)

On January 6, 2017, Omega announced he would be stepping away from Japan to reassess his future. Omega announced on January 26 that he would be negotiating a new deal with NJPW. Omega returned at ROH-NJPW Honor Rising Japan Night 1, partnering with fellow BULLET CLUB member Adam Cole to defeat Jay and Mark Briscoe. On March 12, Omega was eliminated by Tomohiro Ishii in the first round of the 2017 New Japan Cup. At Wrestling Dontaku, Omega defeated Ishii in a rematch. The following month, Omega challenged for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at Dominion 6.11, going to a sixty minute time limit draw with Kazuchika Okada. On July 1 and 2, Omega competed in a tournament for the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship. After defeating Michael Elgin in the first round and Jay Lethal in the semi-final, Omega defeated Tomohiro Ishii in the final to become the inaugural champion. Following the match, Cody, a member of BULLET CLUB, grabbed the title from Omega, however, the two would embrace. Omega would then compete in the 2017 G1 Climax, topping Block B with fourteen points. In the final, Omega was defeated by Tetsuya Naito. At Destruction In Kobe, Omega made his first IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship defence, defeating Juice Robinson. Omega would go on to retain against YOSHI-HASHI at Global Wars Night 4, before defeating Beretta at Power Struggle.

At Wrestle Kingdom 12, Omega retained the IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship against Chris Jericho in a No Disqualification Match. Omega would lose the title to Jay White later that month at The New Beginning In Sapporo 2018 Night 2. Following the match, BULLET CLUB member Adam Page snatched the title from White, however, Omega would return the belt to White. This would bring out Cody, who told Omega not to take Page's moment. As a result of months of tension surrounding the leadership of BULLET CLUB, Cody delivered a Cross Rhodes to Omega. As Page went to join Cody in his attack, Omega's former tag team partner, Kota Ibushi, would make the save, with Omega and Ibushi embracing afterwards. At ROH Supercard of Honor XII, Omega was defeated by Cody.

At Dominion 6.9, Omega won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship from Okada in a No Time Limit Two Out of Three Falls Match. Omega made his first defence at G1 Special In San Francisco, defeating Cody. After the match, Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, and Haku attacked Omega and The Young Bucks. Other members of BULLET CLUB attempted to make the save, but were also attacked. Tonga would hand Cody a chair, however, instead of attacking Omega, Cody would attempt to protect him, only to be hit with a Gun Stun. After, Omega and Cody would reconcile.

Departure from New Japan Pro Wrestling (2018-2019)

Throughout July and August, Omega competed in the 2018 G1 Climax, finishing with twelve points in Block B, failing to advance. On the first episode of Dynamite, Moxley returned, attacking Omega and costing him and The Young Bucks their match against Chris Jericho, Ortiz, and Santana. The following month at Full Gear, Moxley defeated Omega in a Lights Out Match.

However, Adam Cole would make his AEW debut, siding with The Elite, helping them further attack Cage and Jurassic Express. After, Bryan Danielson debuted, siding with Cage and Jurassic Express.

Two months later at Full Gear, Adam Page dethroned Omega. Omega would then begin a hiatus due to several injuries, later having knee surgery and hernia surgery.

Return from injury (2022-present)

On the August 17, 2022 episode of Dynamite, Omega returned, tagging with The Young Bucks in the Inaugural AEW World Trios Championship Tournament. Omega and The Young Bucks defeated La Faccion Ingobernable (Andrade El Idolo, Dragon Lee, and Rush) in the first round that night, before defeating United Empire (Will Ospreay, Kyle Fletcher, and Mark Davis) in the semi-final on the August 31 episode of Dynamite. At All Out, Omega and The Young Bucks defeated Adam Page and The Dark Order (Alex Reynolds and John Silver) to become the inaugural AEW World Trios Champions. However, following the All Out media scrum, Omega and The Young Bucks were involved in a legitimate altercation with AEW World Champion CM Punk and Ace Steel. AEW President Tony Khan would suspend everyone involved, along with vacating the AEW World and World Trios Championships on the September 7 episode of Dynamite.

Omega and The Young Bucks returned at Full Gear, losing to AEW World Trios Champions Death Triangle (PAC, Rey Fenix, and Penta El Zero Miedo), in what was the first match of a best of seven series between the two teams.
