Backlash (2009) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), which took place on April 26, 2009 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island. It featured talent from all three WWE brands: Raw, SmackDown, and ECW.
Background
After WrestleMania on RAW, Randy Orton demanded he be given another chance at the championship, since Triple H had cheated to win. Vince McMahon instead announced a 3-on-3 tag team set for the show, having WWE Champion Triple H, Shane McMahon and himself battle Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes. McMahon and Orton faced-off in a match-up that saw interference by the other members of Legacy, and Shane McMahon and Triple H eventually entered themselves into the fray. A returning Batista rushed to the ring to help out Triple H, since he had been put out by Randy Orton months before after a devastating punt to the head. McMahon subsequently announced that Batista would be taking his place in the match. By this time as well, new GM Vickie Guerrero had made the match for the WWE Championship, stating that if Triple H's team won he'd retain the title. However, if Randy Orton's team won, Orton would then become champion. Because all men have history with Orton, all three members of the WWE Champion's team had a few miscommunications, leaving Legacy to believe that they had the advantage since they were all on the same page.
On an episode of the Cutting Edge, Edge's talk segment, Edge declared his hatred for everything related to new World Heavyweight Champion John Cena. By then, GM Vickie Guerrero had announced the Last Man Standing match' for Backlash. The weeks prior to Backlash, Edge attacked Cena from behind, on one occasion mimicking the ten-count their match would incorporate at the PPV. Matt Hardy continued to hound Jeff Hardy post WrestleMania, running into his matches and attacking him. It was later announced that both brothers would face off in an I Quit match at Backlash. Matt Hardy leading into the match was 2-0, including his victory over Jeff at WrestleMania and a Stretcher match win that took place on SmackDown.
Christian won an Elimination Chase to Backlash, having survived a Fatal Four Way, having survived a Triple Threat match and eventually defeating Finlay on the inaugural episode of WWE Superstars to gain the right to face ECW Champion Jack Swagger at Backlash. On the April 21 edition of ECW, both Swagger and Christian had a contract signing in the ring that saw Swagger inadvertently attack Christian.
Chris Jericho was confronted by Ricky Steamboat on the April 20 edition of RAW while giving his farewell speech as he had been drafted to SmackDown. Steamboat thanked Jericho for unintentionally introducing him back into active competition. Jericho took this as insulting and challenged Steamboat to a match-up at Backlash. Steamboat ultimately accepted the challenge.
Leading up to his winning the title of Money in the Bank for the second year in a row, CM Punk had kicked Kane off the ladder, thus allowing him to win the match-up. CM Punk caught a win over Kane on an episode of RAW, while on an episode of Superstars, Kane picked up a win over CM Punk in a tag team match. Their match was subsequently announced, set for Backlash.
