The challenge is conspicuously altered to refer specifically to British wrestlers when George Hackenschmidt attempts to respond.

-September 4: George Hackenschmidt defeats Tom Cannon in Liverpool, England to win the European Greco Roman championship.

-December 25: Dan McLeod recaptures the American Freestyle title by overwhelming Tom Jenkins in Worchester, MA. Jenkins was hindered by a leg injury caused by blood poisoning, and was forced to forfeit the deciding fall after more than ninety minutes of action.
